The dialogue between Hans Fonk “Harbours of the World” and Annet van Egmond “Metal Nature” highlights their shared, yet unexpected exploration of light, form, and space, but from different creative perspectives and disciplines.
Light as Material
Lightis central to both artists’ work. Hans Fonk, a photographer, uses light to capture the depth and interaction between shapes and space in his compositions. By harnessing light in his photography, he plays with shadows and reflections to create images that transcend mere visual experience. He transforms his photographs into artworks by painting over them with ancient Chinese pigments and tempera, adding an extra dimension to the lighting.
On the other hand, Annet van Egmond, as a lighting designer, uses light as a literal material. In her sculptures, she employs light not only to illuminate spaces but to create shapes and shadows that blur the boundaries of the physical world. Her light sculptures make light a tangible element, transforming space and evoking new meanings. This dialogue elevates light beyond a tool for visibility; it becomes the subject of the artwork itself, where light determines the form, depth, and expression of each piece.
From Functional to Autonomous
Both Hans Fonk and Annet van Egmond come from the design world, where their works originally served a functional purpose. Hans Fonk began as a fashion and interior photographer but transformed his photography into autonomous artworks. His images are no longer simple documentations but expressions that evoke emotions and thoughts. This transformation highlights the purely artistic value of his work, independent of its original functional nature.
Annet van Egmond, originally trained as a sculptor, later gained renown as a lighting designer. Her light sculptures do more than illuminate; they create shapes and shadows that transcend the material world. This shifts light from a tool of visibility to the central subject of her art, shaping form and expression. Her work, once functional, now stands independently as art, showcasing her transition from lighting designer to autonomous artist, focused on raw, organic forms and creative freedom.
